With January coming to an end, do you find yourself losing your motivation? If your goal is to live a fitter lifestyle and in need of a mindset overhaul,Â use the following tipsÂ as a primer to reset your mind,Â you can get back to why you started your fitness journeyÂ in the first place.
Here is Â a list of common mindset mistakes that can diminishÂ your mental strengthÂ and physical progress. They may be mistakes youâ€™re making both inside or outside the gym. To go along with each mistake will be some solutions to help you start your new success path!
NOT HAVING A GOAL: What is the reason you go to the gym?Â Why do you go backÂ Â day after day, lift tons of weight, and make the sacrifices that you do? Without aÂ clearly defined goal, your mind will be spinning Â aimlessly,Â increasingÂ stress and the effects of setbacks life mightÂ throw at you. Most importantly, your progress will beÂ minimal.
Solution:Â Take time to sit and write down what you want out of training. Is it general fitness, new PRs, or to compete? Whatever you choose, make sure you define the why and how. Without clear cut goals, you will be driving in the dark withÂ no lights guiding the way.
YOU DON’T KNOW THE STEPS: Itâ€™s one thing to have a goal. Itâ€™s another to strategize and create a clear plan to accomplish that goal. In business, mission statements are defined by objectives, and your training motives should be no different. Without knowingÂ the steps to get there, your goal is just a nice statement that might look goodÂ on a piece of paper.
Solution:Â Again, take time and write down your steps and methods. As clearly as you have defined your goal, you also need to define each step it will take to get there. For instance, how many training sessions will you perform per week? How will your programming be structured? Will you need to make any special diet modifications? Detail your plan of action, and then simply follow that plan and adjust regularly.
NOT PAYING ATTENTION: Distraction is a big obstacle when it comes to accomplishing goals. Â If you aren’tÂ paying attention to your training, your effort and progress in the gym will not reach its full potential.
Solution:Â Before stepping into the gym, get into the correct mindset. Run through your workoutÂ in your head; which exercises you will do, how many sets and reps, and how much rest youâ€™ll take. Then, during your workout, dedicate your attention solely to training. Eliminate any distraction such as cell phones and idle chat with your friends.
NO CONSISTENCY: Look back at your last week of training. Did you make it to each session? What about your diet? Did you only have about three good days, where you adhered to your plan without cheating?Â ConsistencyÂ is the day-in day-out discipline that fuels results. Without it, youâ€™ll be taking one step forward and one step back.
Solution:Â Do whatever you need to do to create a ritual that will lead toÂ a habit of consistency. Results arenâ€™t accomplished overnight; theyâ€™re accumulated on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Small, incremental steps willÂ develop into incredible results in time, but you must put in the workâ€”even on those days that distraction tempts you.
SPENDING TOO LONG ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Â Social mediaÂ is a wonderful thing, but too much of anything isnâ€™t good for you. You might have started obsessing over likes and shares a bit too much, and now your entire identity is wrapped up in it.
Solution:Â If your entire purpose in life is to post six-pack pics on Instagram, your motivation is shallow and lacks any real significance. Cut the cord. Progress pics are one thing, but to base your self-worth on false adoration has no real staying power.
THE WRONG NETWORK: The people you surround yourself with have great influence on you. No matter how independent you areÂ or how much self-discipline you have, you are still influenced by the people you hang around withÂ . If have toxic people in your life (those who donâ€™t have your best interests in mind), donâ€™t be surprised if you start to develop those same undesirable traits.
Solution:Â You can either communicate your goalsÂ to those close to you and ask for their support, or limit theÂ toxic people from your life. Always surround yourself with those who understand and will support your goals.
YOU KEEP JUMPING AROUND:Â Are you certain that your plan will work? Maybe if you just did a bit more research, you would find the perfect program. Or maybe you just lack confidence in what youâ€™re currently doing. If so, then youâ€™re not optimizing your time and energy for said goal.
Solution:Â Pick a plan, any plan, and stick with it,Â believe in it, and completeÂ it. Believe, no matter what, that your plan is your best option for now. Yes, you can adjust along the way, but put everything you have into that current plan and press on. Any plan half-heartedly executed is guaranteed to fail.
Everyone has different mental struggles, that come in all different forms.Â Everyoneâ€™s motivation isÂ unique and authentic to their own personal development. Donâ€™t be a part of the herd and want what everyone else wants. That only creates a weakÂ state of motivation that can be derailedÂ easily. Find your OWN motivation, cultivate it, make it yours, and use it to succeed both in and out of the gym!
